We have the swine flu!

No, not us. But the lab I work in received the swine flu last week and we are going to begin work on it this coming week to aid in the development of a vaccine. So I guess the hype has come home or at least to the lab. On June 11th, the World Health Organization declared the H1N1 virus a global pandemic. This was declared due to the spread of the virus and not because of the severity of illness caused by the virus. Here in the United States, as with most of the world, most people who have become ill with the swine flu virus have recovered without requiring medical treatment. So, I am not too concerned. More excited because of the stigma attached to it. We work on the flu almost everyday in our lab and I have yet to come down with the flu. But, just to be safe, they have outfitted us with masks — yellow masks.
