Sea joy

This past weekend we traveled to Maine with our good friend Diane Clancy. We have been to Maine before, but a return to this scenic New England state  and its jagged coast has long been overdue.

We stayed in a comfy beach cabin in Wells, Maine which is about 40 miles south of Portland. We also had the luxury of a pool and hot tub. And after traveling through Vermont and New Hampshire and putting Benjamin to sleep, Emily and I took full advantage of the pool and hot tub!

On Friday morning, Emily and I took off on our bikes and rode along the Shore Road down to Ogunquit and into York. Beautiful homes and beach scenes were just some of the highlights of our biking excursion.

Following our ride, we then traveled up to Kennebunkport to check out the Bush compound and an old bookstore that, unfortunately, is no longer there. But the wind and the sea air was good for Benjamin to breath in and he seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.

Finally, after checking out the stores and the beach town, we made it to the beach that afternoon. One of Benjamin’s favorite experiences was when we hopped out on the jetty. He giggled the whole way.

Just like his mom, he couldn’t wait to feel the sand between his toes.

On Saturday morning we did the Marginal Bay walk as the tide was coming in. Here is Benjamin and Diane during our walk. It is obvious that Benjamin enjoyed Diane. He loves those who like to laugh.

Finally, the sun came out and we hit Moody Beach. Benjamin was sporting his lobster swimming trunks. It was only appropriate!

Maine is known for its lobster cuisine and naturally we had to have a lobster dinner. The world’s finest lobster comes from Maine. Lobster is nothing new to us, we have had it before, but this was Emily’s first full 1 pound Maine lobster and she cracked it open just like a Mainer!

Finally on Saturday night we visited the Nubble lighthouse.

When I go down to the sandy shore

I can think of nothing I want more

Than to live by the booming blue sea

As the seagulls flutter round about me

I can run about – when the tide is out

With the wind and the sand and the sea all about

And the seagulls are swirling and diving for fish

Oh – to live by the sea is my only wish
